HOMEWORK - The amount of homework assigned is designed to help master the subject material and to pass the STARR test which students MUST pass to move on to 6th grade.  I determine the amount of homework required by assessing students on a daily basis.  It should take most students about 10 to 40 minutes if they put forth serious effort.  Students should never work more than an hour on Math homework as it would be better to stop before getting too frustrated and end up hating math.  It would be far better for students to come in and discuss the material the next day as I can set time aside to work with them until they understand it.  At the same time, I realize these are 5th graders and they also need to have fun.  As parents, you ultimately determine the homework load for your child balanced with your family’s home life.
